PALICE initiative empowers teachers worldwide with play-based learning videos

In an effort to integrate play-based learning into the education system, the shooting of tutorial videos for the PALICE (Play and Learning in Children’s Eyes) initiative took place from June 21 to June 24, 2023, in the Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. These videos will empower teachers worldwide to facilitate play activities in classrooms using two innovative tools: Teacher RePlay and Children ReAct.

The shooting of these tutorial videos occurred across three schools located in the Gobindaganj and Saghata Upazilas. A total of 69 children and 6 teachers actively participated in the shooting process, representing three different age groups: 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12 years old. The diverse participation ensured that the videos cater to the needs and developmental stages of children across various age ranges. A refresher session was organized for the teachers who participated in the pilot phase of PALICE to align them with the shooting process.

The shooting of the videos was planned to cover three types of play: Free play, Guided play, and Teacher Directed play. By showcasing these different play styles, the PALICE initiative intends to promote a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and methodologies associated with play-based learning.

Moreover, the videos aim to capture five key characteristics of play, which are integral to effective learning experiences. These characteristics include being joyful, actively engaging, iterative, meaningful, and socially interactive. By emphasizing these aspects, the PALICE initiative aspires to inspire and equip teachers to create dynamic and immersive play-based learning environments.

IID is implementing the PALICE initiative in Bangladesh as part of a Consortium led by FHI 360, with support from The LEGO Foundation.
