To ensure sustainable improvement in education quality, Bangladesh urgently needs a permanent education commission, according to Manzoor Ahmed, a prominent education reform advocate. Speaking at a session organized in front of Bardhaman House, Bangla Academy, Ahmed highlighted the pressing need for long-term reforms in the education sector, especially after the transformative changes following the July 24 uprising.
The session, moderated by Sunjida Rahman, Head of Youth for Policy, focused on the future of education in Bangladesh and the role of a permanent education commission in fostering systemic reforms. Ahmed emphasized that such a body would provide continuity, accountability, and a robust framework to address the evolving needs of education. He stated, “Without a stable and empowered commission, our education system will remain fragmented and reactive. A permanent commission would ensure that we align our goals with global standards and prepare our youth for the challenges of tomorrow.”
Youth participants actively engaged in the discussion by posing critical questions about the necessary changes in the education sector following the societal shifts brought by the July 24 uprising. In response to one such question, Ahmed outlined key reforms, including revising the national curriculum to reflect modern skills and values, investing in teacher training, and addressing the gaps in education infrastructure. He also stressed the importance of including differently-abled individuals and those with special needs in mainstream education. “We must ensure that no child is left behind. The education system must accommodate diverse learning needs to create an equitable society,” he said, addressing a participant’s question about inclusive education.
The session concluded with a dynamic exchange of ideas among attendees, including educators, policymakers, and students. Many expressed their support for the establishment of a permanent education commission, viewing it as a vital step toward achieving a cohesive, inclusive, and forward-looking education system. The discussion emphasized the importance of aligning education reforms with the aspirations of a nation determined to build a brighter and more equitable future.
